Charge, maintain and optimise your 12 V battery system with the right gear.
Whether you’re heading out for the weekend in your 4WD, touring in a caravan, or building a full off-grid system, it all starts with reliable charging equipment. This collection brings together the essential pieces: DC-to-DC chargers, AC dual-battery chargers, and MPPT solar controllers, all chosen to deliver performance, safety and compatibility with Aussie touring life.

What’s in this collection

  • DC-to-DC chargers: Designed for vehicle installs, these chargers take power from your alternator (or solar) and properly charge your auxiliary battery bank, especially important when using lithium or AGM batteries.
  • AC chargers / dual-battery AC chargers: When you plug into shore power (caravan parks, home garage) you’ll need a charger that can maintain your auxiliary battery and switch between battery and mains intelligently.
  • MPPT solar controllers: These are the brains of your solar-to-battery system, maximising solar output and safeguarding your battery. Examples: Renogy Rover Li series.

Why your system needs more than just a “charger”

Many “chargers” on market simply rely on traditional charging methods which are not optimised for modern battery chemistries (lithium, AGM) or for off-grid / vehicle systems. A modern system requires:

  • Intelligent multi-stage charging compatible with lithium or deep-cycle batteries
  • Proper handling of variable alternator voltages, multi-source input (DC + solar + AC)
  • Protection and monitoring built-in

For example, as noted in a guide: “A DC-to-DC charger ensures your auxiliary battery maintains optimum charge and isolates your main battery when parked or off-road.”

How to choose the right charger/controller for your set-up

1. Define your recharge sources

  • Alternator / 4WD travel: you’ll want a DC-to-DC charger that handles real alternator voltage and smart charging for your aux battery.
  • Shore power / caravan park / home plug-in: use an AC dual-battery charger.
  • Solar input: requires an MPPT controller to convert solar panel output efficiently into battery charge.

2. Match with your battery chemistry

  • If you have lithium batteries, you must use a charger compatible with lithium (check BMS, voltage set-points).
  • For AGM / lead-acid, ensure the charger supports correct charge profiles.

3. Match ratings to your load and battery size

  • Ensure the charger current (A) matches or exceeds what your system requires.
  • Example: You may need a 30-40A DC-to-DC charger if your alternator or solar input is significant.
  • For MPPT controller: check input voltage, max panel wattage, battery voltage compatibility – e.g., the Renogy Rover 40A MPPT can accept up to 520W input for a 12V system.

4. Integration & wiring

  • Keep cables short, well-fused, and rated for high currents.
  • Mount in ventilated, protected position.
  • Ensure you have proper monitoring if desired (Bluetooth, display).
  • For vehicle installs: choose chargers designed for variable input and engine noise.

Care & Maintenance

  • Regularly inspect wiring and mountings for vibration damage.
  • Keep charger terminals clean, dry and corrosion-free.
  • For solar controllers: clear dust/sand, ensure ventilation and proper heat dissipation.
  • Periodically check firmware (if supported) and update as required.
  • Monitor battery health – a charger can’t compensate for a failing battery.
