Roof Tent In Africa
Our travelling life together began with a Defender and a roof-top tent, driving through Southern and Eastern Africa. It was a small, compact set-up that could take us anywhere — and it kept us safely off the ground, away from the curious wildlife! The challenge, of course, was having to pack everything up just to head out sightseeing for the day.
Ground Tents on the East Coast of Australia
Before kids, and with a large dog, we spent weekends exploring the east coast in ground tents. It was simple, cheap, and felt like “real” camping, sand in the bed and all! But as trips got longer and if the weather turned, the lack of comfort really showed, and once our first child arrived, space quickly became an issue.
Forward Fold Camper Trailer
With two kids and a dog, we upgraded to a forward-fold camper trailer. It gave us loads of space, a huge annex, and the ability to settle in comfortably for weeks at a time. It carried all the gear and comforts we could want, though on one-night stops after long driving days, the set-up and pack-down definitely tested our patience.
Hybrid Off-Road Caravan
Next came a hybrid off-road caravan, which felt like pure luxury: real beds, plenty of water and power, and still small enough to squeeze into trickier spots. But when we began full-time travel, the limited space inside — especially not having an internal kitchen or ensuite — left us wanting more.
